How to Extract Still Frames from a Video (Full Quality)

The fastest way to extract frames from video without losing quality: drop the file into a timeline editor, scrub to the exact moment, and export the frame at the video's real resolution instead of your screen's. Why you'd want a still from a video
Thumbnails are the obvious one. A frame pulled from the actual footage always matches the video better than a re-staged photo. Social posts and documentation are the same story: sometimes the frame you need already exists at 0:03.20 and re-shooting it is silly.
The reason I use it most, though, is AI video. Generators like the ones in our AI video generator roundup cap clips at a few seconds, and the standard trick for extending a shot is image-to-video: grab the last frame of clip one, feed it back in as the seed for clip two, and the motion continues from where it stopped. How to extract frames from video in VideoCraft
- Create a free account. The editors don't cost tokens and screenshots run entirely in your browser.
- Open VideoCraft and drop your video anywhere on the timeline. It lands as a clip, ready to scrub.
- Drag along the ruler until the Player shows the frame you want. The seek is live: the monitor follows your pointer as you drag, so you can hunt by eye.
- Click the 📷 camera button next to the timecode (there's a second one in the timeline toolbar, same thing).
- Name the file, pick PNG, and hit Save As… to download it. OK instead drops the frame into your Media bin as a new image asset.


Landing on the exact frame
Getting close is easy. Getting the precise frame where the wave crests takes a little more care, and VideoCraft gives you two ways in. The first is plain zoom: stretch the timeline out with the zoom control and the same drag gesture covers a much smaller slice of time, so tiny mouse movements become single-frame nudges.
The second is a quirk I use constantly: the floating Keyframe Editor (select the clip, then "Show Keyframes" in Clip Settings) supports arrow-key stepping. With that window focused, ← and → move exactly one frame, Shift-arrow jumps five, and its playhead is synced both ways with the main timeline, so the Player updates as you step. It's meant for animation work, but it doubles as a frame-by-frame scrubber. Step, watch the monitor, capture.
What "full quality" actually means here
The camera button doesn't grab the preview image you see on screen. It re-renders the frame at the sequence resolution, which you set under Settings → Sequence settings. My test project was a 1920×1080 sequence, so the PNG came out 1920×1080 even though the Player was displaying at about a third of that inside a 1600px browser window. Presets run from 720p up to 4K across 16:9, 9:16, 1:1 and the other common aspects, and a Custom dialog takes any size. Match the sequence to your source resolution and the capture is pixel-true.
It also composites everything. Every video track under the playhead renders into the frame with its position, scale, crop, opacity and blend mode, and keyed transparency survives: screenshot a green-screened clip with nothing beneath it and the PNG keeps real alpha. One honest gap: transitions don't render into screenshots yet, so if you need a frame from the middle of a cross dissolve, that's not there today. They do render into a full video export, though, so if it's a mid-transition frame you're after, export the timeline to MP4 and pull the frame from the finished file.
The VLC and pause-and-screenshot routes, honestly
You don't need us for this job, so here's the fair comparison. Pausing a video and pressing Print Screen is the worst option: you get your monitor's resolution at best, the player's pause overlay and progress bar are often in the shot, and if the video is 4K on a 1080p screen you just threw away three quarters of the pixels.
VLC's Take Snapshot is genuinely good. It exports at source resolution, free. Its weak points are the ones you'd guess: frame stepping is fiddly, snapshots save to a buried default folder with generated names, and it does nothing beyond the raw frame. VideoCraft earns its place when you want more than a screenshot: precise visual scrubbing, several frames named and organized in one sitting, a frame with layers composited or a key applied, or a still you're going to use on the same timeline anyway. And since it runs in a browser tab, there's nothing to install on a locked-down work machine.
The bonus move: grade the frame first
Because the capture renders the processed frame, anything you do to the clip shows up in the still. Drag an effect from the Effects panel onto the clip, tune it in Clip Settings, and the camera captures the graded result. For thumbnails this is a real workflow: warm the shot up, crush the blacks a little, then capture, instead of color-correcting a PNG afterward in a separate app.


I tested this with the Warm effect at 70% temperature on that sunset clip, and the captured PNG matched the graded Player exactly. The effects run on the GPU through WebGL, and the screenshot path renders through the same pipeline, so there's no "preview looked different" surprise.
