How to Crossfade Songs (Smooth DJ-Style Transitions)

A crossfade is two songs overlapping while the first gets quieter and the second gets louder. Get the shape of those two fades right and the room never notices the seam. This post covers how to crossfade songs in a browser, free, two different ways: edit the blend in SoundCraft (our free online DAW) with drawn volume envelopes, or perform it live on the DJ tool's crossfader. Along the way: why naive fades dip in the middle, how long a blend should run, and what to do about two basslines fighting each other.

How to crossfade songs in SoundCraft

SoundCraft is a multi-track editor, so the setup is the same one every DAW uses: put each song on its own channel and overlap them. One thing to know up front: timeline clips don't have little fade handles on their corners. Fades in SoundCraft are volume automation, which sounds like more work but is actually the better tool, because you control the exact shape of both sides of the blend.

  1. Create a free account and open SoundCraft. All three ClipCraft editors are free and run entirely in the browser; your songs decode locally.
  2. Drop your first song onto Channel 1, then drop the second onto Channel 2, further right, so its start sits under the first song's ending. Clips snap to the bar grid when you drag them (hold Alt for a free drag).
  3. Type the first song's tempo into the BPM box in the top-left toolbar (or hit Tap a few times in time with it). Now the grid lines mean bars of your actual song, which makes the next steps much easier.
  4. Turn on automation mode: the small atom icon next to the Channel settings header. It glows red while armed.
  5. Click Channel 1's volume fader. A red horizontal line appears across the lane: that channel's volume envelope.

Now draw the fade-out. Click directly on the red line where the overlap begins to drop a breakpoint there, then click the line again where song one ends and drag that second point all the way down. Points snap to the grid while you drag, so landing exactly on a bar is easy. Drag below the −12 dB floor and the readout flips to −∞ dB, which is true silence rather than merely quieter. Repeat the mirror image on Channel 2: a point at silence where the overlap starts, a point at 0 dB where it ends. Right-click any point to delete it if you misclick.

The volume dip, and how to curve around it

Here's the part most beginners miss. If both fades are straight lines, each song sits at roughly half level in the middle of the blend, and half plus half does not equal full when you're dealing with two unrelated recordings. The combined energy sags about 3 dB at the midpoint. You hear it as a hole, a few seconds where the music goes distant before the new song rescues it.

The fix is called an equal-power crossfade: both songs hold closer to full volume through the middle, so the summed loudness stays level. In SoundCraft you get there by curving the fades. Alt-drag the line segment between two points and it bows; pull each fade outward, toward loud, so the two curves cross above their halfway mark. A curve grade around +0.5 on both sides gets you close enough that your ears stop caring.

When you export, the envelopes render into the file. WAV and MP3 exports both carry automation, so the blend you hear on playback is exactly what ends up in the bounce.

Beatmatching basics

A crossfade between two rhythmic songs only works if their downbeats agree. Two kicks landing a tenth of a second apart sounds like a galloping mess, and no fade shape can save it. So before you draw anything, slide the incoming clip until its first downbeat sits on a bar line of the outgoing song. Grid snapping does most of this for you once the project BPM matches song one; hold Alt while dragging for the fine nudge if the song's intro doesn't start cleanly on its own beat.

How long should the overlap be? For dance and electronic material, 8 to 16 bars is the DJ standard; at 124 BPM, 8 bars is about 15 seconds, which is what the screenshots above use. For pop and hip-hop, where arrangements change fast, 2 to 4 bars usually feels better. And if either song has a long ambient intro or outro, you can stretch way past these numbers because there's no beat to clash.

Honest limitation: SoundCraft doesn't time-stretch yet. Clip transpose and detune are tape-style, so pitch and speed move together. Detune reaches ±50 cents, about 3% of speed, roughly the gap between 128 and 124 BPM, but it drops the pitch a touch too. For songs more than a few BPM apart, either embrace the cut instead of the blend, or mix them live on the DJ tool and let its sync handle tempo.

Cut the lows on the incoming song

The muddiest part of any blend is the bass. Two kick drums plus two basslines occupying the same 40 to 200 Hz range will smear into rumble even when the beats are aligned. The DJ fix is old and reliable: the incoming track enters with its low end cut, and you swap the bass over in one move near the end of the blend.

Editing a crossfade gives you precision. Performing one is more fun.
