DAW Automation 101: Volume Rides, Filter Sweeps and Recording Moves

Set a fader once and it holds that value for the whole song. Give it a timeline and it becomes a performance: quieter here, louder there, a filter opening into the drop. That's DAW automation, and it's the difference between a static mix and a produced one. This post teaches it from zero in SoundCraft, our free browser DAW, where you can automate the volume and pan of every channel plus every knob of all 15 effects. Everything you draw renders into the exported file.
What DAW automation actually is
An automation envelope is a line drawn across the timeline that tells one parameter what value to have at every moment. The line is made of breakpoints: put a point at 0 dB on bar 4, another at −6 dB on bar 6, and the volume glides down 6 dB over those two bars, every playback, exactly the same way. No hand on the fader required.
The reason producers lean on it so hard is consistency. A great mix is full of tiny moves nobody consciously hears: the vocal up half a dB for one line, the hi-hats ducked in the verse, reverb swelling on the last word of the chorus. Doing those live on a fader takes a take. Drawing them takes a minute, and they never drift.
Draw your first volume ride
- Create a free account and open SoundCraft. The editors are free; paid plans add storage and server compute, not features.
- Drop a song onto a channel. A temporary session works fine.
- Click the small atom icon next to the Channel settings header. It turns red: automation mode is armed.
- Click the channel's volume readout. A red horizontal line appears across the lane. That line is the channel's volume, all the way through the song.
- Click directly on the line to add a breakpoint, then drag it. Points snap to the bar grid while you drag (hold Alt for a free drag) and a live chip shows the value in dB.

Two details worth knowing before you draw much. First, new points only come from the line itself; you have to click within a few pixels of it. Clicks anywhere else in the lane pass through and behave normally, so you can still seek and select clips with an envelope showing. Second, an automated fader stops being a set-and-forget control: it displays whatever the envelope says at the playhead. In the screenshot above the fader reads −5.9 dB because the playhead sits inside the duck. Drag that fader now and the whole envelope shifts with it, shape intact.
To make a segment between two points curve instead of running straight, hold Alt and drag the segment itself. It bows toward wherever you pull it. Curved fades sound more natural than linear ones, and if you're blending two songs together the curve is what keeps the middle of the blend from dipping; our crossfade guide is really one long volume-automation exercise. Mistakes are cheap: right-click a point to delete it, highlight a span and press Del to clear just the points inside it, or right-click the volume readout to wipe the envelope. Ctrl+Z undoes any of that.
Automate any effect: the chooser chip
Volume is the gateway move. The lane can edit any parameter on the channel: a small dropdown chip sits at the top of the envelope, and it lists Volume, Pan, then every knob of every effect in the channel's rack, plus a Power (on/off) entry per effect. A dot marks parameters that already have automation, and the chip grows a ✕ Clear button for whatever the lane is showing.

Power deserves a special mention because it's the cheapest trick on the list. Its lane is binary, square steps only, top is on and bottom is off. Draw the effect off for three bars and on for one and you get rhythmic mute-stab energy, or a delay that only exists on the last beat before the chorus. Pan is the width play: a slow drift from left of center to right across eight bars makes a static synth feel alive without touching its sound.
The filter sweep
The most famous automation move in electronic music is a low-pass filter opening into a drop. In SoundCraft: add the Auto Filter effect to the channel (it defaults to a low-pass at 1.2 kHz), pick Freq in the chooser chip, and draw a rise. Park the cutoff low through the build, then sweep it up to around 10 kHz so the track snaps into focus right at the bar you choose.

One thing I like here: frequency-style parameters get a logarithmic lane, the same scale their knobs use. Halfway up the lane is halfway up in pitch, not halfway through 19,900 Hz, which would cram everything musical into the bottom tenth. The Auto Filter's cutoff runs 26 Hz to 19.9 kHz and the live chip reads out in Hz and kHz while you drag. If you'd rather sculpt with an EQ band than a filter, every parameter of the 8-band Eagleizer EQ sits in the same chooser list.
Drawing versus recording moves
Drawing is precision. Recording is feel. Next to the ⏺ record button in the transport there's a hollow twin: the record-automation button. Arm it, hit play, and any automatable control you move while the song runs writes its envelope at the playhead. Grab the volume fader and ride it against the vocal the way a mix engineer would, and when you stop, the ride is sitting in the lane as ordinary breakpoints you can tidy up by hand.

The details are sensible. MIDI-mapped hardware counts, so a physical knob on your controller records the same as a mouse drag. The stream thins itself to one point per 40 ms so a ride doesn't land as thousands of dots. And a new pass overwrites only the span you actually cover: re-record two bad bars and the rest of the take survives. My honest workflow is record first for anything with groove, then flip to the atom mode and nudge the points that landed a hair off the grid.
It all ends up in the file
Automation in SoundCraft isn't a playback-only trick. WAV and MP3 exports, channel bounces and tracks you post to the public feed all render with every envelope baked in, and the envelopes save with the project (delete an effect and its lanes go with it).
